Rock Band to Heavily Support User-Created Tracks

by Leo Portugal July 22, 2009 @ 1:11 pm

Harmonix has announced plans to allow users to create and sell their own songs in a community store called The Rock Band Network. For more info, check out the official site and video:

A public beta may begin as soon as next month and it is slated for release before the end of the year. Soon you may be able to find Rock Band DLC of your favorite local and indie bands, and of my band. Censored versions of some tracks would have to be produced, as cussing will not be allowed in created tracks.

The library of available songs is going to be huge. Like they say in the official video, they’re “opening the musical floodgates.” I can’t wait to see which of my favorite bands might have tracks in the Rock Band Network.

There are several variables at play in order for this to work well: ease of use for creators, the quality control of created products, and a strong rating and category systems in the Rock Band Network to allow users to find the kind of music they are looking for. So far it looks like all is going well and I am optimistic that everything will come together to create a vibrant Rock Band community.

Fallout 3 Playthrough Launches us into the Apocalypse

by Leo Portugal July 18, 2009 @ 5:22 am

We put our new video recording tech to the test as we begin a Fallout 3 playthrough!

In a reimagining of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, our protagonist, Diggens, shifts from being good to being evil approximately every 10 minutes as Gary and I pass the controller around. In the first episode, we begin character creation and Diggens is born. This could be the start of something big.

We’re still working out the kinks. Mostly the sound needs some tinkering.

This playthrough was inspired by the Persona 4 Endurance Run.

Bossblog Review: Magic: The Gathering – Duels of the Planeswalkers

by Leo Portugal July 8, 2009 @ 8:30 pm

Rating: 3.5 PUHs out of 5

I’ve always liked the idea of playing trading card games in video games. When the Pokemon Trading Card Game came out for Game Boy Color in 2000, I was all over that. It was my only hope of getting a Charizard card without forking over whatever crazy price they were going for at the time. In Final Fantasy VIII my favorite thing to do was play the simple card game, “Triple Triad”. I also played Yu-Gi-Oh! Forbidden Memories for the Playstation, which took the Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG and turned it upside down by making up its own rules.

And now Magic: The Gathering – Duels of the Planeswalkers brings well-polished Magic: The Gathering to Xbox Live Arcade.

Azura Vash is taking you off his friends list… Even if you aren’t on it!

by Leo Portugal July 2, 2009 @ 4:53 pm

In more non-news presented as though it were news, Xbox Live user Azura Vash sent out a voice message declaring, “I’m cleaning out my friends list.”

Azura Vash’s Message

I received this message on my Xbox account and was a bit puzzled because I was not friends with Azura Vash to begin with. Luckily, there was a second message from Vash sent seven minutes after the first:

Azura Vash’s Message #2

Thanks for clearing up the confusion Azura Vash! And apology accepted.

For anyone who’s wondering, the background music to the messages is the menu music from Dawn of War II (or Donna War II?).
